What is common between Raghuram Rajan, Nandan Nilekani, Manohar Parrikar, Sundar Pichai, Nikesh Arora and Sachin Bansal?
It is Indian Institute of Technology.
Yes, they all are alumni of IIT who went on to do something large in their life. Clearly, their aura and fame is enough to push any student, seeking to pursue engineering, to desperately try to get a seat in IITs.
However, the seats are limited and the number of candidates aspiring for those seats is humungous.
This leads to a disturbance when the results are out and when some of the candidates who dedicated their time, effort and soul to the IIT prep couldn’t make it by just a few marks.
Though, even you couldn’t get into IITs you could still study in a college which is at the same level as IITs specified in the last post of bx-zone.com.
But, the purpose of this post is to motivate you by making you meet a few people who either dropped out of IITs or failed to get into IITs. Even then, due to their vision, hard work and determination they made it large in this unfair world.
So, let’s meet those people –

Prashant Bhushan
Even if you remotely follow politics, you would be knowing about Prashant Bhushan.
Prashant Bhushan is a well-known lawyer and a politician.
He never backed out from speaking his mind on political affairs and was an important member of ‘Team Anna’ formed in 2011 but do you know that he joined IIT Madras just to drop out in 1st semester to pursue his interest in economics and later law.
Dr M Damodaran
Dr M Damodaran dropped out of IIT Madras in his second year to pursue a degree in economics. He later joined Delhi University to study law.
Dr Damodaran with his unorthodox choices served as the chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India from 2005 to 2008. He held bog jobs in his career as the chairman of IDBI bank, chairman of UTI (India’s largest mutual fund), he was also an officer of Indian Administrative services, and served as the chairman of SEBI from 2005 to 2009.
Dr Damodaran is a person who everyone should look up to. When everyone opts to get into IITs for a better living and get big jobs, Dr Damodaran proved that by believing in yourself you can do better in life, achieve fame and get bigger jobs.
Mukesh Ambani
When a son expects an extravagant gift from his father, the father says ,”Son, I am not Ambani”
Every father always compares himself with the richest man of India when it comes to satisfying extravagant demands of a superbike or a car from his adolescent son. But do you really know that Mukesh Ambani dropped out of IIT to be with his friends in Institute of Chemical Technology (Mumbai). Today Mukesh Ambani is the Chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd, India’s biggest oil, petrochemical company with operations in retail and telecom & the richest man of India.

Nobel Laureate Venkataraman Ramakrishnan
He is a renowned American and British biologist and the current president of the Royal Society who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009.
In a lecture of 2010 in the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru, he revealed that he failed to clear IIT exam as a student. He even wrote the entrance exam of a reputed medical institute but couldn’t go through it.
Ramakrishnan also told publicly that in his early years he faced a lot of rejections while trying to secure a job but there you go, the universe rewards the brave, he chose science, he didn’t quit and he won the nobel prize.
Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla failed to clear IIT JEE exams but she didn’t quit and joined Punjab Engineering College to pursue her dream of Aeronautical engineering.
She joined NASA and made the whole country proud. Though, she is not with us today but still, this great woman from Karnal inspires girls and woman and even men to not quit when it comes to pursue their dreams.
Pullela Gopichand
Pullela Gopichand wrote IIT JEE exam and failed which made him focus more on his first love Badminton. With his focus, hardwork and determination he went on to win All England Open Badminton Championship in 2001.
With his achievements he has been able to receive many civilian honors of India like Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award.
Gopichand also revealed in an interview that he and his brother both wrote IIT exam which his brother cleared and luckily he couldn’t. He attributed his success to failing in the IIT exam.

No doubt, IITs are important and one of the prestigious institutes of the world but there are brighter stars in the universe than the ones visible from the naked eye.
